The Gifted Education Program at Harris Bilingual Immersion School is an enrichment program for students who have been identified as gifted through PSD in either math or literacy. Here at Harris, student needs are differentiated within the classroom and in small groups, supporting the reality that students’ enrichment should happen frequently throughout the day with their primary teacher and the support of the enrichment coordinator. In addition to what is happening throughout the day, we utilize Math WIN (What I Need) groups which provide your student with the time and space to be engaged in cognitively demanding work in a smaller setting with peers. For our students gifted in Language Arts, the classroom teacher and the enrichment coordinator will collaborate and coordinate literature studies and research projects to analyze and evaluate a wide variety of literature genres. Additionally, our school counselor and the enrichment coordinator will work with students on social emotional topics, problem solving and growth mindset development. Enrichment at Harris is for students in 3rd-5th grade and there are currently 10-15 students each year in this program. All students collaborate with the enrichment coordinator, classroom teachers, parents/guardians, and the guidance counselor to set academic and social-emotional goals that will be documented in an Advanced Learning Plan (ALP).
